Greasebeta leads to happy campers

Imagine that you, or a member of your maintenance team, had to get down on hands and knees and manually unblock the main kitchen drains because they had become clogged by a rather unpleasant mixture of fat, oil and grease. Then imagine that you had to do this every week. Apart from the rather unpleasant nature of this job, try also to imagine the cost involved, the disruption to the kitchen and the potential health hazard.

Unfortunately for David Jelfs at Mullion Holiday Park, he did not have to imagine this scenario because it was very much a reality. Or at least it was until he installed a GreaseBeta system from Cleveland Biotech. "There was very little that we could do about the cause of the problem", says David. "The build up of such deposits is nobody’s fault they are simply a by-product of the cooking processes found in kitchens the world over, caused by the discharge from ovens, fryers, and other cooking appliances. However, they do present a problem that needs to be dealt with - ignoring them just simply isn't an option. Because FOG (Fat, Oil, Grease) build-up is gradual it was impossible to tell exactly when the problem would reach the point where we had to interrupt the operation of the kitchen to sort it out. If it happened right in the middle of lunch or dinner, well, you can imagine the consequences! Thankfully thanks to the GreaseBeta this is now a thing of the past."

The GreaseBeta system is designed to combat the build-up of fat, oil and grease (FOG) from food preparation and dishwashing, offering professional caterers a completely homogeneous, fully biodegradable answer to the costly problem of blocked drains.

If left untreated, FOG will accumulate on the surfaces of drain lines, pump wells and grease separators, eventually causing blockages. With time the untreated fat starts to rot, not only producing a foul odour but also releasing sulphonic acids that can attack any metal in the immediate vicinity, causing structural weakness and eventual failure of the machinery.

At the heart of the system is Amnite L100, a liquid, biological product that rapidly degrades FOG, converting it into environmentally harmless compounds. Unlike chemical alternatives, Amnite L100 does not merely ‘move’ the problem elsewhere, it eliminates it altogether.  It is odourless, does not contain any pathogens and is made from non toxic ingredients, making it safe to use in a catering environment.

The GreaseBeta liquid fat digester is dispensed via a wall mounted unit; automatic daily dosing eliminates human error and ensures the optimum level of lipase producing bacteria are maintained in the drain line. The system avoids frequent emptying of fat traps, disruptions to the kitchen from blocked drains, lost business due to offensive smells, emergency rodding and damage from flooding resulting from blockages. Benefits include free running drains; controlled costs; and the satisfaction of using an environmentally friendly response to a pollution problem.

The GreaseBeta system has numerous advantages over other similar products on the market: it is battery operated and requires no electrical connections; supply and installation of the system is at most £400, a tenth of the cost of some alternatives; no water connection is required; it requires no daily maintenance - just 'fit it and forget it', Cleveland Biotech will send one of its dedicated engineers to service the unit once a quarter; and last but by no means least, you can buy the system - including installation and a year’s fluid and service - for under £1,000, a fraction of the cost of most other systems.

"The GreaseBeta is maintenance free and has proved extremely effective in keeping the drains clear, whilst helping us to achieve our aims as an environmentally responsible organisation", concludes Jelfs. "Aside from that it only costs us around £450 per year to run and that is a price I am more than happy to pay for clear, free running drains!"
